Practical workplace workshop
Using optimism to improve wellbeing, performance and resilience
Optimism isn’t just a mindset, it’s a skill that can be learned. This interactive, evidence-based workshop introduces the science of optimism and gives participants practical tools to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, build resilience, and approach setbacks with a more proactive mindset.
Key learning outcomes
Participants will:
- Understand what optimism is and the wellbeing benefits it offers, including a longer lifespan, a lower risk of chronic disease, and better cognitive and physical function
- Explore Martin Seligman’s research on learned helplessness versus learned optimism
- Learn about negativity bias and why the brain is wired to focus more on negative experiences than positive ones
- Understand neuroplasticity and how paying attention to positive experiences can help rewire the brain to support optimism
- Practise cognitive restructuring to identify, dispute, and reframe negative thoughts
- Apply the ABC model (Activating event, Belief, Consequence, Dispute) to challenge pessimistic thinking after setbacks
When negativity bias takes hold
Many workplaces focus on what needs fixing. While this can help solve problems, it often leaves negative thinking patterns unaddressed. This can show up as:
- Setbacks triggering a spiral of pessimistic thinking
- A tendency to focus on what went wrong rather than what can be learned
- Feelings of powerlessness after repeated challenges, leading to inaction
- Missed opportunities to reframe setbacks into proactive problem-solving
Without the tools to challenge negative thinking, teams miss opportunities to build resilience, improve wellbeing, and perform at their best.
